Firefighters received the call for a large pile of burning garbage at the station, located at 61 Taylor Reed Place, around 3:22 a.m. Thursday, said Stamford Fire Capt. Philip Hayes.
When firefighters arrived they found the unoccupied building was filled almost to capacity with refuse awaiting to be transferred out to another station, Hayes said.
Firefighters initiated an attack with hose lines to protect the metal building and begin extinguishing the fire, the Capt. said.
A tower ladder was set up and the fire was attacked with a master stream nozzle capable of 1,000 gallons of water per minute.
At the same time, City Carting employees used heavy equipment to pull the piles of burning refuse apart while firefighters extinguished the remaining fire, he added.
The fire was declared under control at 4:49 a.m.
There was no noted damage to the facility or equipment and there were no injuries, Hayes said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the city fire marshal’s office.
During the blaze, Stamford Police provided traffic control and Stamford EMS stood by while firefighters worked to control the fire, Hayes said.
A total of 41 firefighters responded to the scene at one point, he added.The final fire department unit left the scene at 7:04 a.m.
